Again Sarpedon missed, but with his second throw Patroclus skewered the Lycian through the chest. Sarpedon’s last words were for Glaucus, to take command of the Lycian contingent. Having lost their staunchest ally the Trojans crashed back into the Achaeans as they sought to despoil Sarpedon’s body. The Myrmidon Epigeus had just grasped the corpse when Hector smashed his head with a rock, his entire skull splitting apart. Patroclus gained revenge in like fashion on Sthenelaus and the battle intensified, with the body of the fallen Sarpedon its epicentre, buried under a mass of weapons, blood and dust, still attracting fighting men like flies to rich cream.

Finally, the Trojans broke, streaming back towards the city gates. Still Patroclus in his aristeia hounded their broken ranks, and body after body fell to the ground, cleaved by his sword or spear.
